Work in Ireland

The Work Permit Scheme is issued for work permit for occupations offering a salary of EUR 30,000 or more per year where Green Card Permits are not offered.

Overview

In very restricted circumstances, work permit can be granted for salary ranges under EUR 30,000 per year. The work permit can be given to an applicant for the occupation identified on the permit. It is granted for two years initially and can be renewed for an additional three years. The work permit can be issued for an indefinite period after duration of five years.

Who can apply?

Either an employer or an employee can apply for the permit. The employee must have relevant qualifications, skills or experience for the proposed employment.

Categories of Work Permit Scheme

There are two types of occupations under which the Work Permit Scheme can be applied for:
• The annual salary is EUR 30,000 or more annually (excluding bonuses). In this case, the work permit is obtainable for all eligible occupations, other than those which are different to the public interest.
• For salary ranges less than EUR 30,000 a year, only a very inadequate number of occupations will be considered for issuance of a work permit.

In either case, work permits will not be considered for any job categories specified in the ineligible job categories list.

Labor Market Needs Test

A job opportunity in which a person or employer intends to make an application under the Work Permit Scheme should be advertised in the FAS/EURES employment network and in local and national newspapers for 3 days to make sure that first of all, a national of the EEA or Switzerland, and second, a citizen of Bulgaria and Romania, cannot be found to fill the vacancy.
